People have been visiting Mount Ontake for worship since ancient times. Those who carry visitors’ luggage and serve as guides are called “Gōriki.”
Today, we also work as mountain guides, tour conductors, and transporters of supplies.
In other words, we are what you might call “porters.” You may find it easier to imagine our role as similar to that of the Sherpa people.
