Mountain Guide
Gōriki
A unique porter of
Japan’s sacred mountains

What`s Gōriki ?

  • People have been visiting Mount Ontake for worship since ancient times. Those who carry visitors’ luggage and serve as guides are called “Gōriki.”
Today, we also work as mountain guides, tour conductors, and transporters of supplies.
In other words, we are what you might call “porters.” You may find it easier to imagine our role as similar to that of the Sherpa people.

The history of Mount Ontake

① Animism. In ancient times, nature worship was practiced.
② Shugendō. Only those who completed 100 days of rigorous training were permitted to climb Mount Ontake.
③ Late Edo period. A monk named Kakumei Gyōja climbed Mount Ontake with many followers, overcoming objections from the magistrate’s office. A few years later, another monk, Fukan Gyōja, reached the Otaki trailhead and established the style of Ontake worship that continues today.
④ Present day. Both faith-based and leisure climbing are practiced.

Old Mount Ontake Trekking and Mountaineering

The path established by the monks Kakumei Gyōja and Fukan Gyōja is called “Ontake Kodō.”

Benefits of Hiring a “Gōriki” as Your Guide

The title of “Gōriki” has been passed down orally. Only those whom the union leader has recognized as “trustworthy enough to be entrusted with the strength” can become a Gōriki.
“Gōriki” are part of the customer service industry. Carrying luggage is only a means to an end.
The most important thing is for our customers to descend the mountain safely. The next most important is for our guests to achieve their goals. As people who have lived at the foot of Mount Ontake, we will do our utmost to support you. In addition, you can enjoy local stories that only a Gōriki living at the foot of the mountain can share—stories that other guides cannot.
