The history of Mount Ontake

① Animism. In ancient times, nature worship was practiced.
② Shugendō. Only those who completed 100 days of rigorous training were permitted to climb Mount Ontake.
③ Late Edo period. A monk named Kakumei Gyōja climbed Mount Ontake with many followers, overcoming objections from the magistrate’s office. A few years later, another monk, Fukan Gyōja, reached the Otaki trailhead and established the style of Ontake worship that continues today.
④ Present day. Both faith-based and leisure climbing are practiced.
